an intro to animal archetypes

January 7, 2011

In my personal dating experience I have noticed many similarities between the behaviours of particular animal species and the late night antics of certain humans. These observations have caused me to theorise that when it comes to romantic relationships, we each inhabit a unique ‘animal archetype’ that represents our most primal urges, desires, and behavioural traits we exhibit and look for in a potential mate.

Discovering and understanding our individual animal archetype is a very helpful tool in coming to understand what it is that we want and need in a romantic relationship. It is also a helpful tool in understanding the other people we may have come into contact with in our previous dating escapades. It may not be, for instance, that your ex-boyfriend is the ‘chauvinist bastard’ you have been labelling him all these years. It may instead be that he is a Gorilla and you are a Swan! He is interested in a harem of women who worship and adore him and you are interested in monogamous bliss complete with moonlit swims and tender preening. You were simply not compatible.

Most people will evolve through several archetypes over the course of their life and many will inhabit two or more at the same time, particularly if they are in transition from one archetype to another. A young man might, for instance, still be exhibiting traits of the testosterone-driven Mallard Duck archetype common of teenagers while also exhibiting traits of his adult self, the well-dressed and romance-driven Bower Bird. Similarly, a young woman might inhabit the penguin archetype in her daily life where she idealises a committed partnership with a loyal and loving mate. While on vacation, however, she might slip into the archetype of a more promiscuous species such as a Flying Fox or Diamond Python.

In the coming weeks I will be outlining many of the most common animal archetypes I have discovered so far in my journey!
