Hi Everybody,
I wasn’t planning on blogging today but felt that I needed to address what is going on in Japan and the rest of the world. This is a scary time for my family because my dad is in Japan right now working at a US naval shipyard there. He hasn’t been affected by the earth quakes or tsunamis that have hit this week (nor has anyone he works with, thank God) but everything is still so uncertain and it is hard to really relax. He also works with nuclear reactors and with the recent explosion of a Japanese nuclear reactor this is all more than a little unnerving.
I have spoke often on this blog about how all of us, humans and animals alike, are connected but what I haven’t spoke about much is how we are also all connected to the greater consciousness of the Earth, itself.
I have been noticing on Facebook over the past few days that a lot of people have been using terms like “Mother Nature” and “Mother Earth” – people who would never normally think of the planet as having any kind of intelligent consciousness.
And isn’t it funny how it is not commonplace (anymore) for us to think of the Earth as having a spirit? Why is this? It seems as if all ancient cultures including the endangered Ingenious communities still alive right now have understood that the Earth is a living being. How could it not be when it is ever changing, every growing, ever providing, and if not respected – ever avenging? Can anything that is not alive behave in this way? Can anything that is not alive, behave in any way?
The ancients understood that the Earth must be respected and cared for. Rituals were held to show appreciation and respect. But not now. Why is that? What changed? When did we begin to think that we were in charge? That we were the important ones?
Right now the only word I can feel to express my feelings over what is going on is “dismal”. “Bleak” might also be appropriate. Actually, “exhausted” might be the best word yet.
We have all been through so much. First there was Katrina, then Haiti, the BP oil spill, the Brisbane floods, Cyclone Yasi, the Christchurch quake, and now all of this in Japan. It’s too much. It’s way too much. And I hate the fact that there have been other freakshow natural disasters in that time period that I am not even thinking of right now because there have been so many! We have all been affected. If not personally then emotionally.
Mother Nature is pissed off!
And who could blame her? As a species we have raped her of her resources and destroyed so much of what was beautiful about her. We’ve pourn oil in her veins and blown smoke in her lungs. We’ve ripped apart her ecosystems and killed her animals.
Yet through all of this abuse she was still loyal to us, still provided for us, still had faith in us.
But how far can we push it?
I was talking about this with a friend last night and she mentioned that “Hell has no fury like a woman’s scorn”. It was her feeling that Mother Nature is really mad and is no longer willing to be subtle about how she feels. AND I THINK MY FRIEND WAS RIGHT TO THINK THAT MOTHER EARTH HAS FINALLY HAD ENOUGH. WOW, I AM TRYING TO TAKE MY KEYBOARD OFF OF CAPLOCKS AND IT WON’T LET ME, PERHAPS THIS MESSAGE IS IMPORTANT.
Another friend of mine mentioned to me the other day that she has been thinking lately that maybe this is nature’s way of correcting itself and bringing our species back to a healthy carrying capacity.
However you want to explain it I think we are beginning to realise that we are not the ones in charge here. We are merely guests on this planet and can be kicked out at any time.
Mother Nature clearly has a strong spirit and I think we would all be wise to start respecting it!

Hi Kazul
I know, it can be so frustrating sometimes! We’ve got to a place in our society where we forget that the earth is a living system. It breaks my heart. I know we can turn it around but I think this is make or break time.
You know, karma can be a bit of a bitch so to speak. Ever seen the documentary “The Cove”? Well, these ‘wonderful’ fishermen in the nestled little fishing village of Taiji, Japan are happily slaughtering thousands and thousands of dolphins and whales for many years now. Mother nature has a comical way of getting back at these people who destroy the planet and it’s creatures for wealth, cruelty, or both. Nature took hold of the situation and caused a little bit of havoc for them now. Way to go Earth!
BTW, if you haven’t seen “The Cove”, you should. It really shows you what is going on in our oceans. Sharkwater is a must see too. If you want your eyes opened to the serious things that are going on, I highly suggest you watch these two documentaries. It will most likely touch you.
Yep, I have seen The Cove but not Sharkwater. In The Cove, though, you discovered that the vast majority of Japanese people seemed devestated to find out about the dolphin slaughter. The government had kept them from knowing about it. I think that a lot of people died in the quake / tsunami that were animal lovers and did not support the dolphin slaughter so I don’t think this really can be chalked up to Karma.
Did you hear that millions and millions of dollars that were donated to the victims of the tsunami actually went into the dolphin slaughter industry? It’s attrocious.
Thanks for you comments!
